Wicked promo mocks "The Creation of Adam" fresco by Michelangelo.

The art known as “The Creation of Adam” is a fresco by Michelangelo that is found at a ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Italy.

From wikipedia:

It illustrates the Biblical creation narrative from the Book of Genesis in which God gives life to Adam, the first man. The fresco is part of a complex iconographic scheme and is chronologically the fourth in the series of panels depicting episodes from Genesis.

More from wikipedia here.

It is an inversion of the biblical story and satan is now god.  Satan gives “life” or “fire” (illumination) to mankind.   The story of prometheus and the fire he stole comes to mind.

The promo tagline says “everyone deserves a chance to fly” … hinting at the sympathy they have for the devil and all his evil.

Everything about “Wicked” is an inversion. It’s one of those properties like “Maleficent” that recasts a villain as a misunderstood heroine, messing with our minds.
