En 1801, alors qu’à Paris le frère Jean Portalis (loge “L’Amitié”, Aix-en-Provence) participe activement à la négociation du Concordat avec le Saint-Siège et à la rédaction du Code Civil avec les frères Jean-Jacques Régis de Cambacérès et Claude-Ambroise Régnier, une page de l’histoire de la franc-maçonnerie s’écrit le 31 mai à Charleston, en Caroline du Sud. Là, le colonel John Mitchell, un marchand né en Irlande, et Frederick Dalcho, un médecin né à Londres de parents prussiens, “ouvrent le Suprême Conseil du 33° pour les États-Unis d’Amérique”, premier Suprême Conseil d’un rite en trente-trois grades qui prendra en France le nom de Rite Écossais Ancien et Accepté (REAA). Il annoncera sa création et son existence par une circulaire adressée le 1er janvier 1803 « à travers les deux hémisphères ». Les maîtres maçons des deux grands systèmes rivaux (Ancients et Moderns) y sont indistinctement admissibles, quelle que soit leur religion (d’où peut-être le qualificatif “Accepté”). La devise Ordo ab Chao est adoptée, qui, sur le plan organisationnel, manifeste le désir de mettre en ordre un système de degrés cohérent et de mettre fin au foisonnement chaotique des hauts grades. Le rite, dont tous les grades sont d’origine française, synthétise les influences des essaimages initiaux des loges anglaises, des loges de Perfection écossaises, de structures dissidentes comme le Conseil des Chevaliers d’Orient du frère Pirlet, l’Ordre des Écossais Trinitaires ou l’Ordre de l’Étoile Flamboyante du baron de Tschoudy et du système administratif de la Mère Loge Écossaise du Contrat Social dont est membre le comte Auguste de Grasse-Tilly (initié en 1783 dans la loge “Saint Jean d’Écosse du Contrat social”, Paris). L’universalité du REAA est fondée sur le caractère initiatique continu de ses trente-trois degrés (chacun procède du précédent et prépare le suivant) et sur le contenu de ses divers grades qui englobe et perpétue la quasi-totalité des sources ancestrales de la spiritualité dans le monde occidental et proche-oriental. It is therefore not possible to claim the REAA without adhering to this initiatory specificity and without trusting in the coherence of its gradual evolution.
