Billboard has an article about how absurd it is for “conservatives” to jump to the conclusion that this performance was Satanic. Well, the song is called “Unholy” and features a bunch of people dressed like demons cavorting in a magic circle. What could possibly give anyone the idea that that is Satanic? They also suggested that seeing that for what it is is unfairly demonizing LGBTQ+ people. Well, I am politically a moderate progressive, and I can see that it is Satanic, so that’s not just a conservative viewpoint. I also think it’s doing the LGBTQ+ community no favors for some of their own people to associate them with Satanic imagery.

Sam Smith – Pray

Track 10 on The Thrill of It All

[Verse 1]
I’m young and I’m foolish, I’ve made bad decisions
I block out the news, turn my back on religion
Don’t have no degree, I’m somewhat naïve
I’ve made it this far on my own
But lately, that s**t ain’t been gettin’ me higher
I lift up my head and the world is on fire
There’s dread in my heart and fear in my bones
And I just don’t know what to say

[Chorus]
Maybe I’ll pray, pray
Maybe I’ll pray
I have never believed in you, no
But I’m gonna pray

[Verse 2]
You won’t find me in church (No)
Readin’ the Bible (No)
I am still here and I’m still your disciple
I’m down on my knees, I’m beggin’ you, please
I’m broken, alone, and afraid
I’m not a saint, I’m more of a sinner
I don’t wanna lose, but I fear for the winners
When I try to explain, the words run away
That’s why I am stood here today

[Chorus]
And I’m gonna pray (Lord), pray (Lord), maybe I’ll pray
Pray for a glimmer of hope
Maybe I’ll pray (Lord), pray (Lord), maybe I’ll pray
I’ve never believed in you, no, but I’m gonna…

[Bridge]
Won’t you call me?
Can we have a one-on-one, please?
Let’s talk about freedom
Everyone prays in the end
Everyone prays in the end
Oh, won’t you call me?
Can we have a one-on-one, please?
Let’s talk about freedom
Everyone prays in the end
Everyone prays in the end

[Chorus]

GENIUS NOTES

“Pray” is the second single from Sam Smith’s sophomore album The Thrill of it All. The song follows lead single “Too Good at Goodbyes”, which dropped just four weeks earlier.

The song combines strong gospel influnces with a hip hop beat, courtesy of Timbaland, who co-produced the song with Jimmy Napes.

Smith told Billboard that “Pray” was inspired by a visit to Iraq:

I spent five days in Mosul and came back embarrassed that I had known so little about the world and other people’s lives…I wanted to write about what is going on in the rest of the world, and that it’s not always pretty.

The tone of the lyric is searingly self-critical; a ‘coming-of-age’ song involving feelings of shame, guilt, newly raised awareness, and ultimately some degree of trust in whatever Power they feel might exists.

It is also a markedly intelligent song, indicating Sam’s grasp of the shortcomings and immaturity of many young people, and the shocks and processes that lead to self-growth and a compassionate outlook.

Sam Smith performed the song at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

Sam Smith – Unholy

[Intro]
Mummy don’t know Daddy’s getting hot
At the Body Shop
Doing something unholy
He like it, like it, yeah (Ooh)
He like it, like it, yeah (Yeah, yeah)
He like it, like it, yeah (Uh)
He like it, like it, yeah

[Verse 1: Sam Smith]
A lucky, lucky girl
She got married to a boy like you
She’d kick you out if she ever, ever knew
‘Bout all the **** you tell me that you do
Dirty, dirty boy
You know everyone is talkin’ on the scene
I hear them whisperin’ ’bout the places that you’ve been
And how you don’t know how to keep your business clean

[Chorus: Sam Smith & Kim Petras]
Mummy don’t know Daddy’s getting hot
At the Body Shop
Doin’ something unholy
He’s sat back while she’s droppin’ it
She be poppin’ it
Yeah, she put it down slowly
Oh-ee-oh-ee-oh, he left his kids at
Ho-ee-oh-ee-ome so he can get that
Mummy don’t know Daddy’s getting hot
At the Body Shop
Doin’ something unholy (Woo)

[Verse 2: Kim Petras]
Mm, daddy, daddy, if you want it, drop the addy (Yeah, yeah)
Give me love, give me Fendi, my Balenciaga daddy
You gon’ need to bag it up ’cause I’m spendin’ on Rodeo (Woo)
You can watch me back it up, I’ll be gone in the A.M. (Yeah)
And he, he get me Prada, get me Miu Miu like Rihanna (Ah)
He always call me ’cause I never cause no drama (Drama)
And when you want it, baby, I know I got you covered (Yeah, yeah)
And when you need it, baby, just jump under the covers (Yeah)

[Chorus: Sam Smith, Kim Petras & Both]
Mummy don’t know Daddy’s getting hot (Hot)
At the Body Shop (Shop)
Doin’ something unholy
He’s sat back while she’s droppin’ it (She)
She be poppin’ it (She)
Yeah, she put it down slowly
Oh-ee-oh-ee-oh, he left his kids at
Ho-ee-oh-ee-ome so he can get that
Mummy don’t know Daddy’s getting hot (Unholy)
At the Body Shop (Ah)
Doin’ something unholy (Unholy)

[Outro: Sam Smith & Kim Petras]

GENIUS NOTES

“Unholy” is the second single from Sam Smith’s fourth studio album, Gloria, released on 27th January 2023. The song is a collaboration with German-born singer and songwriter, Kim Petras.

The song is unlike anything Sam has done before and signals their determination to extend their range; to experiment. In an interview with Billboard magazine in August 2022 Sam talked about their need to move away from sad ballads and explore new directions.

Gone are the heartbroken torch songs that defined so much of their [Sam’s] early career; in their place are jubilant sounds ranging from dance-pop kiss-offs to choral expressions of elation. And for Smith, leaning into happiness may be the greatest risk of all… “I think joy for me, and for a lot of queer people, is quite a dangerous place. We’re all masters of pain, and I think it’s … courageous to step into the queer joy of it all.”’

The song tells a story of unfaithfulness and betrayal, reminiscent of “I’m Not The Only One”. The response isn’t grief and passivity, but resilience, humour and mischief; not to be taken seriously and therefore a definite new departure.

Rumours of a collaboration between Smith & Petras first started when Smith posted a photo captioned “Mmm daddy daddy”

The Music Universe in its review on the song’s release date of 22 September wrote;

Crafted around a sultry Arabic scale … a multi-voiced, menacing sound collage with instant club appeal, underpinned with a throbbing bass.

Within two days of release, the song reached number one on a range of worldwide chart platforms.

In February 2023 “Unholy” won the Grammy for Best Duo/Group Pop Performance at the 65th Grammys Awards. It is Sam Smith’s first Grammy nomination since 2015 and Kim Petras’s first Grammy nomination ever.

Dorothy’s Interlude Lyrics

[Interlude: Divine, Judy Garland, Sylvia Rivera]

How’s this for a centre spread?
Over the rainbow
Believe in the gay power

GENIUS NOTES

“Dorothy’s Interlude” is a very small compilation of important moments for the LGBTQIA+ community. Within eight seconds it covers snippets of drag queen Divine in John Waters’ film Pink Flamingos (1972), Judy Garland singing “Over The Rainbow,” trans activist Sylvia Rivera’s speech at a 1973 gay liberation rally and the 1991 ballroom culture documentary Paris Is Burning (1990).

Sam Smith – Gloria

[Verse]
Demons on my shoulder
Monsters in my head
Shadow in the water
Will you be my friend?
The world revolves around me
As I lay in my bed
Dreaming of more, more

[Chorus]
Be yourself so loud tonight (So loud)
They’ll hear you from the stars (And they will hear your voice)
Sparkling like dynamite (Sparkle)
If that is who you are (Is who you are)
A hymn for Gloria (For Gloria)
For Gloria, Gloria
A hymn for Gloria (Gloria)
For Gloria, Gloria (Gloria)
Gloria
Gloria (Gloria)

It’s all but a hymn for Gloria (It’s all a hymn for Glori—Glori—, Gloria)
It’s all but a hymn for Gloria (It’s for Gloria)

GENIUS NOTES

This is a surprise track on Sam Smith’s Gloria album, a classical-style choral production recorded in a Cambridge church. Sam’s voice emerges part way through, providing a contrasting, seemingly improvised track against the background of formal Gregorian chant.

In an interview on British morning news programme “BBC Breakfast” on 11th November 2022, Sam explained the meaning of the song which is also the album’s title.

“Gloria” isn’t the name of a person, but the fighting spirit within me. I am letting it loose. The album is about spiritual, emotional and sexual liberation.

I can’t stand the guy or his music. And that was just when he was a gay guy in a suit. Now he’s gone full devil worship. Gross.

Over the rainbow is direct referencing to MK ultra programming. Gay ra p e and s e x servicing of the trainers and handlers is also a very big part of mk ultra.
