Redundant to whom? Truly smart people would not try to make a society that makes billions redundant. They would look for ways to make society work for everyone who is and will be here.

I remember Logan’s Run. When the citizens reached the age of 30, they would have a huge “ceremony” for all turning 30 that year. Complete with red (sacrificial) clothing. Of course they were really being taken to be killed and disposed of.
