Marvel (even prior to Disney) and DC have done the same thing. They retcon/reset rapidly, chasing away the old fans in favor of a younger audience who really don’t care as much. All the while, they change character for no clear reason, changing their sex, changing the origin, have characters “come out”, and so on. I can’t remember the last time I read a comic, watched a comic film, or had the desire. My kids do not read comics, watch comic based entertainment, nor do they care to. It looks like Star Wars will go the same way for them, and I can’t say I’m sorry.
