As ridiculous as this story is, the natural reflection in the mirror is completely wrong. You should be seeing both the actual man and the reflection of the man based on the placement of the figures in this painting.
To me it looks like the barmaid is imagining someone talking to her. Which leads me to believe she is supposed to be a schizophrenic.

Idk, this story seems ridiculous. Her expression is not “unsettling”. She’s blank-faced and bored by a name patron trying to hit in her. The piece is not spatially accurate (the reflection on the mirror is not accurate) but the way she’s painted is lovely.
