The Coup's "Party Music" (circa 2001)

The Coup is a rap duo from Oakland, CA formed in 1991.  For their fourth album release, they decided it would be a good idea to feature the twin towers exploding with what looked like a detonator (actually a guitar tuner) while the other “celebrated” the “orchestrated” event.

While the album was released in November of 2001, the actual album cover art was finalized in June 2001, before the events of September 11th.

Did they have something to do with it?  Unlikely.   Did they have foreknowledge of it?  Probably.  It seems a lot of people knew something big was coming, including the artist Prince and others being told to “stay home”.

Needless to say, they caught a lot of criticism due to this but in return cemented their band with the tragic event forever because you know … all publicity is good publicity.

What do you think?

The creepiest of the many pop-culture foreshadowings of 9/11 was the band Jimmy Eat World’s album & angsty titular single “Bleed American.” Its lyrics included “Salt, sweat, sugar on the asphalt / Our hearts littering the topsoil.” I still have a promo CD single I got shortly before 9/11. The album had to be recalled and given a new cover image & title. Two other singles from the album became MTV staples & made the band emo eye-cons. And peep the band’s initials…

Tori Amos’ surreal “Caught A Lite Sneeze” music video, released 5 years earlier, was in the running for my all-time favorite music vid ever since I saw it in ‘96. But look at its scenes of the Twin Towers and of steel beams falling around her, scenes of her dissociating, plus a scantily-clad teenage girl scrambling inside a burning building. It ends with Tori plummeting downward into a graveyard. Truly jaw-dropping. I blame the director more than her, as she’s from Baltimore, but still. The song came from her album Boys For Pele, whose title referenced sacrificing boys into a volcano. It also had songs titled “Father Lucifer,” “Professional Widow,” & “Muhammad My Friend.” Wholesome… A week after 9/11, she released a covers album whose 11th track was a cheeky cover of Slayer’s demonic “Raining Blood.”

Dr. Dre’s hugely-anticipated sophomore album titled 2001 was released 666 days before 9/11. Dre was 36 at the time of 9/11; every number from 1 thru 36 adds up to 666. The joke later turned out to be on him: His son Andre Jr. died a span of 187 days after Dre’s birthday. Dre found solace in the $40M mansion he later bought from Tom Brady, who was drafted in the 6th round after 6 other QBs, wore #12 (6+6), & won 6 Super Bowls w/ the Patriots, the first one coincidentally right after the Patriot Act was passed.

Indie pop band I Am the World Trade Center released an album in July 2001 whose 11th track is titled “September.”
Satanic rap world mastermind & NYC native Jay-Z dropped an album titled The Blueprint on 9/11. It’s widely believed he & Beyoncé sacrificed Bey’s main rival Aaliyah two weeks before 9/11.

Hundreds of other documented examples exist.

Bonus Amos-related creepiness: The founder of Famous Amos cookies recently croaked. His family released a statement with the closing line “We also know he would love it if you had a chocolate chip cookie today,” which has gematria of 666. I remember the first article I read about Tori Amos was in Entertainment Weekly(?) in ‘92, with “Famous Amos” in the title. It seems to me fame is the worst punishment one can get.

That album cover was changed, but some were pressed with the original design. I worked in a record store starting 10/01. Sooo many people wanted that cover art, and that cd was worth four times more than the new art. The name of the group and the timing of the art always clued me in that they were likely used for the purpose of pre programming, or they were in on it!

I have met the lead singer on multiple occasions and Boots seems like a genuine and honest communist.

Growing up during that time, its not hard to associate America with the Twin Towers. It was a symbol of America’s financial success and control of the world market. This symbol actually competed with the Statue of Liberty in Representing America to the world at the time. That’s how it was to us in other countries. Its one reason why it was targeted. They also tried destroying the Pentagon, another symbol.
